Daily life
The Fortress of Arad was built on the banks of the Mureș River between 1763 and 1783 by order of Maria Theresa, its six-cornered Vauban star design ranking among the most modern fortifications of its time. On 6 October 1849, thirteen generals of the 1848-49 Hungarian Revolution were executed outside its walls, a date still marked as a day of mourning in Hungary; Gavrilo Princip, who killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June 1914, was also held prisoner in the fortress for a time. Transport
Arad's own airport sits about 4 km west of the centre and includes western Romania's largest cargo terminal, though passenger flights are limited. The city runs an extensive tram network alongside bus lines covering most neighbourhoods, and its position on the 4th Pan-European Corridor makes it a major road and rail junction. There is no trolleybus or metro. (Sources: Wikipedia, Wikivoyage)
