Durmitor National Park and Tara Canyon Guide

Durmitor National Park is a Dinaric Alps massif in northwestern Montenegro, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. It holds the Black Lake, the Bobotov Kuk summit, the Tara River Canyon and the Đurđevića Tara Bridge. This guide rests on verified geography; we do not write current tour prices, schedules or opening hours without a source, and where details are missing we honestly say we do not know.

## What and where is Durmitor?

Durmitor is a mountain massif in northwestern Montenegro within the Dinaric Alps and the country's largest protected area. The national park was created in 1952 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980; its roughly 390 km² also take in the Tara, Piva and Komarnica canyons. The massif counts 48 peaks above 2,000 metres, the highest being Bobotov Kuk at 2,523 metres. Its 18 glacial lakes are known as the "mountain eyes" (Gorske oči). The heart of tourism is Žabljak, which at 1,456 metres is the highest town in the Balkans. These broad facts are verified; current opening hours and entry fees inside the park need an official source, and where we lack confirmation we say we do not know.

## The Black Lake and hiking

The Black Lake (Crno jezero) is Durmitor's best-known lake and a trailhead about 3 km from Žabljak. It sits at the foot of Međed peak at 1,416 metres and is made of two lakes, Veliko and Malo, whose connecting strait can dry out in summer. The larger lake reaches 24.5 metres deep, and a path of roughly 3.5 km circles it. From here trails branch to smaller lakes and to summits, among them the highest peak Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m) and the Ice Cave (Ledena pećina), known for its ice stalactites. Demanding high routes need a guide and good weather; without checking on the spot we do not invent prices, times or durations for changing snow and trail conditions, and we plainly write what we do not know.

## The Tara Canyon and the Đurđevića Tara Bridge

The Tara River Canyon forms the massif's northern edge and, at about 82 km long and up to 1,300 metres deep, is one of the deepest river canyons in Europe. For its water quality and ecosystem it was taken into UNESCO's "Man and the Biosphere" programme in 1977. The canyon's landmark is the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, built as a reinforced-concrete arch between 1937 and 1940: 365 metres long, with five arches and a largest span of 116 metres. Its roadway stands about 172 metres above the river. In the Second World War partisans blew up one arch, and the bridge was rebuilt in 1946. Today zipline and bungee activities are offered above it; but we do not write current operating hours and fees without a source, and where there is no confirmation we say we do not know.

## Rafting on the Tara and other activities

The Tara River is one of Montenegro's most popular watersport routes; on the international scale its rapids mostly run from Class III to V, with the highest flow during the spring snowmelt. The classic one-day route covers the most striking stretch between Brštanovica and Šćepan Polje and passes beneath the Đurđevića Tara Bridge. The rafting season generally runs from spring into autumn; summer brings lower, calmer water suited to families. The area also offers hiking, mountain biking and zipline. Rafting is safe only with licensed operators and a life jacket; but we do not write current tour prices, departure times or exact season dates without a verified source, and where we lack confirmation we honestly say we do not know.

## When to go and how to get there

Žabljak is the base for Durmitor, and the nearest international airport is Podgorica, about 170 km away. Access is mostly by road; from Podgorica the main link runs via Mojkovac and the E65, along with the direction of Nikšić. Summer months (June to September) suit hiking, lake walks and rafting; in winter, when snow cover lasts roughly 120 days a year, skiing takes place on slopes such as Savin kuk, Štuoc and Javorovača. Because of the altitude the weather can change quickly and winter roads can turn difficult. Bus and minibus services run towards Podgorica and Nikšić; but we do not write current timetables, ticket prices or slope opening dates without a sourced confirmation, and where there is none we say we do not know.

FAQ

Is the Tara Canyon the deepest canyon in Europe?

The Tara River Canyon, at about 1,300 metres deep, is regarded as one of Europe's deepest river canyons and is often called the deepest in continental Europe. It is roughly 82 km long and part of UNESCO's 1977 biosphere programme. Because exact rankings vary by source, we avoid writing unverified claims when precise comparisons are needed.

Which airport is nearest to Durmitor?

The nearest international airport is Podgorica, about 170 km from the base town of Žabljak. Access is mostly by road via Mojkovac and the E65; buses and minibuses run towards Podgorica and Nikšić. Current flights, timetables and ticket prices should be checked against official sources; we do not write them without verifying.
